WINDOWS EXPLORER

VIEWING YOUR HARD DRIVE (& FLOPPY) FILE SYSTEM

The yellow file folders represent directories

The ‘+’ and ‘-‘ symbols denote that the directory has other directories under it.

The directories and files that are listed on the right side of the screen belong to the open file folder (the one whose name is highlighted) on the left side of the screen. The top of the right hand box should show you the entire path name of the directory (ex. Contents of "NFS\GAMEDATA\CONFIG"). If it does not, then choose VIEW from the top menu – then choose OPTIONS – place a check mark next to the statement DISPLAY THE FULL MS-DOS PATH IN TITLE BAR by clicking there with the left mouse button – then pressing the OK button. You can sort your file listing by clicking on the heading/columns titles – NAME - SIZE - TYPE - MODIFIED.

If you have recently been adding or deleting files (especially if you have left Windows Explorer open), there is the possibility that these changes will not appear on the Explorer screen. Choose VIEW from the top menu – and then choose REFRESH. Doing this will cause the program to re-read the directory and file structure to give an up-to-date listing.

SELECTING FILES

There are many ways to select the files that you want.

1. Under the edit menu, choose SELECT ALL. This will highlight all of the files in that directory.

2. Left click on the first file that you wish to copy, cut or delete. Then while holding the shift key down, left click on the last file that you wish to copy, cut or delete.

3. Left click on the first file – then while holding the CTRL key, left click on the next file that you would like to copy, cut or delete.

MAKING A DUPLICATE OF YOUR FLOPPY DISK

BE SURE TO HAVE A FLOPPY DISK IN DRIVE A AND HAVE A BLANK DISK THAT YOU ARE GOING TO COPY TO READY. Click with the right mouse button on Drive A on the left side of the screen -- choose COPYDISK. This will open up a small window showing where the disk is that is to be copied and where the disk is that it is to be copied to (in almost all cases, it will be DRIVE A to DRIVE A). Press the START button and follow the directions. Then be sure to label your newly created disk – and WRITE PROTECT IT – to prevent accidental erasure.

USING ‘DRAG’ TO COPY OR MOVE YOUR FILES

If you wish to drag your files to other locations --- follow these hints

If you drag with the left mouse button – it will automatically copy the file to the new location.

If you drag with the right mouse button – you will receive a menu where you can choose to copy the file to the new location or move the file to the new location. It will also allow you to create a shortcut to the file.

COPYING TO THE SAME DIRECTORY

If you copy a file and then paste it in the same directory, it will have a name of ‘Copy Of’ placed in front of the file name – because you must have unique filenames within each directory (or folder).
