Windows 98 Features
TASK BAR
Windows 98 offering numerous choices for your taskbar.
1. Address
This allow you to type in a location (ex. C:\WINDOWS)
and view the directory or type in a web address and have your browser open
– your dial-up connection appear and once connected, you will go to the
web site that you typed in.
2. Links
This displays your Links (web sites that Internet
Explorer has given you that it thinks are the ones that you need.
3. Desktop
This displays all of the icons that are on your
desktop – on the taskbar.
4. Quick Launch
This is the one that most will be familiar with.
It displays an icon for launching internet Explorer – Outlook Express –
your Desktop. You can add any of your own favorites by dragging their icon
to that area of the taskbar.
Disk Cleanup
You can find this new utility by opening MY COMPUTER and right-clicking on your hard drive. Choose PROPERTIES from the menu. This will then show you a pie chart representation of your hard drive – free space and used space. There is a new button on the window entitled DISK CLEANUP. Disk cleanup will show you how many bytes of hard drive space that you can free up because of TEMP files, RECYCLE BIN, DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES, TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES, UNNEEDED SCANDISK FILES, etc. It allows you the ability to choose which ones that you delete and will even allow you to view the names of these files before you make your choice.
Magnifier
To install the magnifier program, you need to open
MY COMPUTER – then CONTROL PANEL – then ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. Next, choose
the WINDOWS SETUP tab. This will show you a list of additional features
that Windows 98 allows you to install.
The magnifier is under ACCESSIBILITY. Double click
on Accessibility. Then place a check mark next to Accessibility Tools.
Now, click OK. You will probably have to have your Windows 98 CD in the
CD drive.
To run the magnifier program, look in the PROGRAMS
– under ACCESSORIES – under ACCESSIBILITY – then MAGNIFIER.

If you have closed your Windows 98 welcome screen
and would like to run it again --- look under PROGRAMS – then ACCESSORIES
– then SYSTEM TOOLS – then WELCOME TO WINDOWS. This screen will give you
a brief description of some of the new features of Windows 98.
