UNINSTALLING PROGRAMS
This is getting to be a big problem with some computers where people are not following the rules on how to remove/uninstall a program.
When you wish to get rid of a program on your computer, please follow these steps.
1. Always start by looking in MY COMPUTER – CONTROL PANEL – ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS. If your program is listed here, highlight the program and choose REMOVE.
2. If you cannot find your program listed there, then go to the START – PROGRAMS – and see if there is an uninstall or remove program listed there for the program that you wish to delete.
3. As a last resort, you can right-click on the START button and choose EXPLORE. From Windows Explorer, you will have to locate the directory that contains your program and then delete that directory. This method will always leave various references to this program that you will have to locate and remove manually. Some of the places that will still contain references, would be the PROGRAMS listing – ICONS on your desktop – messages when you boot up that a file cannot be located (this would mean that the WIN.INI – the SYSTEM.INI – the STARTUP directory – or the REGISTRY still contain a reference to this program. It takes a lot of detective work to track down all of these references – so PLEASE use one of the other methods of removing a program if at all possible.
(Here is an example that we came across where a program had been deleted improperly. This computer on bootup into Windows 98 would open WordPad fullscreen and contain a blank document. We looked through all the possibilities of what programs were running and where there was a reference to WordPad. Could not find anything. After more detective work, we found that the directory containing Greetings Workshop had been deleted; but the StartUp directory still contained a listing for the Greeting Workshop Reminders. The computer didn’t know how to display reminders since the program had been deleted, so it opened WordPad.)
CD Player
This is a small application (program) that comes with Windows 95 & Windows 98. You will find it on the PROGRAMS menu – under ACCESSORIES – ENTERTAINMENT – CD PLAYER. If your auto-start is on (this is a default), then placing an audio CD in the CD drive and closing the drive will automatically start this program and play your CD.
You can label this CD and list the songs so that everytime this CD is played on your computer, the name of the CD and song title for each track will be displayed. To do this, from the top menu, choose DISC – EDIT PLAY LIST. Edit the artists’ name and the title of the CD. Under Available Tracks, highlight Track 1 – then click in the box at the bottom of the window where it says Track 1 – and type in the name of the song – be sure to press ENTER or click on the SET NAME button to insure that your selection is saved. Repeat for the rest of the tracks (or songs).
All of this information is stored in a file named CDPLAYER.INI in the Windows directory. If you have typed in the name and information of numerous CDs, you might want to include that file in your backups.
You can minimize the CD Player and listen to the music while you go on with something else on the computer.

Always Preview What You Print
Use the "Print Preview" option (usually found under the File menu) to see what a Web page is going to look like on paper before you hit the Print button. The feature can save you loads of paper; instead of printing out an entire document, use this option to determine which pages you actually need.
The best way to print your open document, is to go to the FILE menu and choose PRINT. In most cases, the Print window will appear. This window lets you adjust the printer properties and options, determine how many pages you wish to print and how many copies you wish to print.
It’s a good idea to learn how to change your printer’s properties. Here you can choose Draft or Economy to conserve ink -- choose to print only in black (when you don’t really need the color) – determine what paper you are printing on, etc.

ß print all pages or just
the even pages or just
the odd pages.
