MS-Word – Change the case of your font

This feature can be very useful. If you copy some text from an internet web page – or you forgot that you had the Caps Lock on, you can use this feature to easily correct the case (upper or lower – small letters or capital letters) of your font. Highlight (or select) the words that you want to change. Then go to FORMAT – CHANGE CASE. You can change everything to lowercase or uppercase or sentence case or toggle the case

MS-Word --- Letter Wizard

Need help creating a well designed layout for your letter. After you have opened Word and you have your blank document --- go to the TOOLS menu, and choose LETTER WIZARD. Here you are presented with numerous choices such as – include the date and in what format – style of the letter – who the letter is addressed to – what salutation – subject/attention/in reference lines to include – what closing – who the letter is from. After setting all of this information up, then click on OK. This will give you a well designed letter and you can apply the finishing touches and, of course, the body of the letter. You could then save this as a template to use for future letters.

Making Four Pages on One Sheet of Paper – MS-Word

To place four pages on one sheet of paper in MS-Word, create four text boxes. This will confine your text to the box that you are typing in. You can use a variety of fonts and justifications within the box.

To create a text box, choose INSERT – then TEXT BOX. Your cursor will change to a four headed arrow and when you press your left mouse button down and drag, you will create a text box. You can change the properties of this box, by clicking anywhere on this box (the outline of the box will change to show you that it is selected). Now when you go to FORMAT – you choose TEXT BOX to change any of the properties such as a border around the box or no border – the size of the box – the position of the box. Once you have made your four boxes, save the page before you do any typing in it. This will now be your template.

Making Four Pages on One Sheet of Paper – MS-Publisher

For your publication, choose a side-fold card instead of a blank full page. Anyone making greeting cards will realize that the side-fold card gives you four equal pages to write on. Two of the pages will be upside down when you print it – but if you are going to cut the pages apart, it won’t matter. If you are going to leave them together, after you have finished the page, do an EDIT – SELECT ALL. Then from the ARRANGE menu, choose ROTATE OR FLIP.

This procedure is good for creating recipe cards, invitations, etc.

Also, did you know that the F9 key is a good shortcut keyboard stroke f or toggling in and out.

Troubleshooting an Unfamiliar Computer

We recently tried to help someone out who wanted to be placed on the internet. He is running Windows 3.1 (anyone remember that operating system) and has a very small hard drive (200 meg). We were not able to install Netscape 3.0 because of insufficient space on his hard drive. Well, doing what I do best, I searched for programs and directories that could be deleted because they were not in use (this was after I had deleted all of the temp files). Well, I discovered that there were TWO Windows directories – and knew that we could save a lot of room by deleting one of the directories. The two directories were C:\WINDOWS and C:\SAVE\WINDOWS – well, for obvious reasons, I choose to delete the C:\SAVE\WINDOWS directory. Well, that was the wrong choice – that’s the copy of Windows that was running and where all of the INI files were stored.

The reason I mention this is – when we do not conform to a few standardization’s, it makes it very hard for someone else to easily troubleshoot your computer problems. Much time can be saved by doing a few things – keeping all of your floppies and CD’s together that pertain to your equipment (printer, modem, computer restoration disk, CD-Rom drivers, etc) – keep backups of all of the data that you do not wish to lose – keep a record of what equipment you have (CPU, modem speed, RAM, etc.) – and if you are going to have two copies of a program on your computer, be sure that you run from the one that would be the standard setting.

DiskCopy

Diskcopy is a small utility program that has been around on computer systems for many, many years. It allows you to copy the contents of one FLOPPY disk to another FLOPPY disk.

You can place an icon on your desktop to help you perform this function (and get a little taste of the DOS environment). Right click on an empty spot on the Desktop to activate the pop-up menu. Highlight the New command and then click Shortcut. A Create Shortcut dialog box will appear. In the Command field, type

                                                                         Diskcopy a: a:

Click Next and enter a name for the shortcut (something like Copy Floppy Disk). Clicking Next one more time will bring up an icon selection window. Choose an icon for the shortcut and click Finish. The new icon will then appear on your Desktop.

Now to copy a floppy disk, you can double-click the icon which will bring up an MS-DOS screen. From here you just have to follow the on-screen instructions to create a backup copy of your valuable diskette data. Too bad backing up your hard drive couldn’t be just as easy!

After you have finished copying your disk, you will be left with an open black window. To close it properly, you should type EXIT (which will return you to Windows from the DOS environment).

To make the window close automatically when you are through, right click on the icon and choose PROPERTIES. On the PROGRAM tab, place a checkmark in the box next to CLOSE ON EXIT.
