This will be another week of questions and answers – so bring your questions. I have also been ask to stress FILES – what they are - how to store them – how to find them.

Windows Maintenance – Clean out the files that start with ~

1) Close out of all programs in Windows.
2) Click Start, go to Find, and click on Files or Folders
     In the Named line, type "*.tmp" (No quotes)
     Insure that the "C" Drive is selected in the "look in" line.
     Click on "Find Now".
     When the search is completed, note the number of files found at the bottom left.
     Go to the "Edit" menu at the top left and choose "Select All"
     Go to the "File" menu at the top left and choose "Delete"
     Answer "Yes" to the recycle bin question or "Yes to all" if available.
3) Return to the Find files or Folders dialog box
    In the Named line, type "~*.*" (No quotes)
    Insure that the "C" Drive is selected in the "look in" line.
    Click on "Find Now".
    When the search is completed, note the number of files found at the bottom left.
    Go to the "Edit" menu at the top left and choose "Select All"
    Go to the "File" menu at the top left and choose "Delete"
    Answer "Yes" to the recycle bin question or "Yes to all" if available.
         Note: if any of the selected files returns the message "This file cannot be deleted...." click "OK".

Patch for Windows 98 Second Edition Shutdown Problem

        If your PC has had problems shutting down since you upgraded to Windows 98 Second Edition, you probably need the 502 KB patch that can be found at

How to uninstall this patch -----
         You should save and close all open documents and close all programs before attempting to uninstall this update. Then click on Start/Find/Files or Folders and search for 239887UN.INF. Once this file is displayed, right-click on the file and choose Install. You will need to have your original Windows 98 Second Edition CD available to uninstall this update.

Sending E-Mail

Send HTML or text
           AOL  -----   AOL’s rich text features are proprietary and work only when you send e-mail to other members.
           Netscape  -----   If you don’t see a formatting toolbar above the message text window, choose EDIT – PREFERENCES – and under MAIL & NEWSGROUPS – click FORMATTING. Under Message Formatting, check USE THE HTML EDITOR – then click OK. Also on this FORMATTING tab, you have the choice of sending your message in HTML, Text, Both or be ask which way to send it.
          Outlook Express  ----- Outlook Express sends mail in HTML by default. To change this setting, choose TOOLS – OPTIONS and then make your choice under MAIL SENDING FORMAT.

AOL ---- Send Pictures Inline or as Attachment
                    To mail a picture to other AOL users, when you are writing the message, click the INSERT A PICTURE button that looks like binoculars. If you are sending the picture to those who are not on AOL, when you are writing the message, click the ATTACHMENT button.

How do I control Spam
        AOL ----- To block email from specific Internet addresses, type the keyword MAIL CONTROLS. Click on SET UP MAIL CONTROLS at the bottom of the screen and follow the screen prompts.
        Netscape ----- To block email, choose EDIT – MESSAGES FILTERS. Click NEW – name the filter, and set the filter rule, set the action to DELETE and click OK.
        Outlook Express ----- To turn away messages from a particular sender, open a message from that person, right-click the address following From, and choose BLOCK SENDER. Next time a message arrives from that sender, Outlook Express 5.0 will automatically move it to the Deleted Items folder.

How do I add contacts to my address book
        AOL ----- When you open a message, click the ADD ADDRESS button to add the sender to your address book.
        Netscape ----- Right-click the message header or anywhere within the message body - choose ADD SENDER TO ADDRESS BOOK from the pop-up menu. Verify the information and then click OK to save it.
        Outlook Express ----- In Outlook Express 5.0, right-click a message in the message list and choose ADD SENDER TO ADDRESS BOOK. In Outlook Express 4.0, you must first open the message, then right-click the From address and choose ADD SENDER TO ADDRESS BOOK.

How do I create mailing lists
        AOL ----- Create a mailing list by clicking MAIL CENTER – ADDRESS BOOK. In the pop-up box, click NEW GROUP. Name the group, then type the addresses in the address box, separating each one by a comma.
        Netscape ----- Open the address book (COMMUNICATOR-ADDRESS BOOK) and click CREATE A NEW LIST (or GROUP). Name the list. Move the Mailing List window aside so you can see the address book and then simply drag names from the address book to the Mailing List window. Click OK when finished.
        Outlook Express ----- To create a mailing list, choose TOOLS – ADDRESS BOOK – then FILE – NEW GROUP. To add people who are already in your address book, click SELECT MEMBERS – highlight the name in the resulting dialog box, click SELECT to add them to the list. Click OK when finished.
