This Week’s Program

Retrieving pictures from your digital camera that is connected to your serial port. Also bringing text file information into your spreadsheet.

Bring Text File Into Your Spreadsheet

If you have information that is in columns that you have saved from the internet or a word processor document, you can bring this information into a spreadsheet program which will allow you to sort it in an order that you would like without having to retype it. Here are three samples of it’s use -----

Sample One (a list of information from the internet)
On the web page http://florida-repeaters.org/144lo.htm you will see that this page is divided into three sections -– what we are interested in – is the database in the center (the sections of this page are called frames). By right clicking in the center frame, we can choose to Open frame in new window. Then from the File menu, we can choose Save As. Change the Save As Type to Plain Text (txt). Give the file a name and determine where you want to save it.
Open your spreadsheet program (the directions here are for Excel, but should be close for the other spreadsheet programs). From the File menu, choose Open. Change the File of Type to Text Files. Now for the hard part ---- find the file that you saved (you have to watch which folder you are placing it in when you save it --- and then know how to locate that folder). Click on the Open button and this will start the Text Import Wizard.
The wizard has determined that your data is aligned in columns with spaces between the data fields. Remember that the wizard uses its best judgement to determine this information (and many times it is correct) – but you should look at the choices if you think it is wrong. Click on Next. The next screen is where you determine the width of each column and make sure that the columns are divided correctly. Scroll through all of your data to verify this. The instructions for changing the column locations (or deleting one that should not be there) are given clearly on the screen. Please read them. Click on Next. This screen will let you decide that certain columns you do not wish brought into your spreadsheet or if some of the columns contain dates, then you can specify the formatting. Then click on Finish. And your data will appear in your spreadsheet.
Now you can adjust your column widths – set the number of decimal places in your numbers – insert titles – etc.

Sample Two (a text file created in your word processor)
We will use as a sample the roster for the group that was typed in WordPad --- the columns are separated by spaces – and the document was saved as a TXT file
Follow the same instructions as above.

Sample Three (a table created in Word)
How about the table that we created when we were creating a table in Word for doing Christmas letters. That table can also be brought into your spreadsheet – IF you first save the table as an HTML document.
In this particular case, you just open your spreadsheet program – choose FILE – then OPEN. Change the Files of type to HTML documents. The file will be opened without having to run the TEXT IMPORT WIZARD.

From Your Digital Camera to Your Computer

ACDSee
You can use ACDSee to transfer your pictures from your camera to your computer – and then erase them from your camera.
Under TOOLS – your camera should be listed as a selection. Then you will have the option to BROWSE the pictures on the camera – or TRANSFER ALL of the pictures from the camera to the computer.
With this program, you can choose to have the picture deleted from the camera when you transfer them – saving you an extra step. Also, the pictures are saved directly to your hard drive.

IrfanView
IrfanView is another program that you can use to transfer your pictures.
Under FILE – SELECT TWAIN SOURCE – your camera should be listed there. Once you have your camera (or twain source) selected – then under FILE – ACQUIRE – will allow you to access the pictures on your camera.
There is no choice of deleting the pictures from the camera – and the pictures are loaded directly into the program (in memory) – therefore, you must then save them to your hard drive.

Adobe PhotoShop
PhotoShop will also allow you to transfer your camera pictures into it.
Under FILE – IMPORT - SELECT TWAIN SOURCE – your camera should be listed there. Once you have your camera (or twain source) selected – then under FILE – IMPORT – TWAIN – will allow you to access the pictures on your camera.
Again, in this program, there is no choice of deleting the pictures from the camera – and the pictures are loaded directly into the program (in memory) – therefore, you must then save them to your hard drive.

As you can see, when you install your driver software for your digital camera – it installs a TWAIN file (this is a driver that allows your camera to be accessed from within a program that has TWAIN capability). Therefore, any program that is capable of accessing your scanner can access your digital camera.
