This Week’s Program

Since we looked at creating a calendar in Word last week – I thought we would take a look at creating a calendar in MS-Publisher this week.

Create a Calendar in Word 97

Want to create a calendar in Word 97 and do not have a wizard (or template) for it. Here is how you can download the wizard from Microsoft. While you are in Word, choose the HELP menu – then choose MICROSOFT ON THE WEB – then FREE STUFF. This will open up your browser and dialer to take you on to the internet and directly to the Microsoft Office Update page. Choose your version of Word – then uncheck the box next to UPDATES and place a checkmark in front of ADDINS AND ASSISTANTS. Then click on SEARCH NOW. Look for Word 97 Wizards: Time Management (calendars are a part of time management) and click on the DOWNLOAD NOW. Determine where you are going to save it and click on SAVE (notice the name of it is WDTMGMT.EXE). Now the hardest part – Locate the file that you just downloaded and double-click on it to install it. If you have forgotten where you saved it, do this – START – FIND – WDTMGMT.EXE and then click on FIND NOW. If it is located this way, then double-click on it to install it. If while you are installing it, you are ask "The file being copied is older than a file currently on your computer. Do you wish to keep it? – always answer YES.

Now to run the calendar wizard – Open Word 97 – choose FILE – NEW – click on OTHER DOCUMENTS and you should see a calendar wizard. Start the calendar wizard and answer the questions as you go along. It will give you a few style choices you can make. When you finally click on FINISH, wait and your calendar will be created.
After your calendar has been created, you can edit it to include your pictures and text. To remove a picture, click on it and then hit the DELETE key on the keyboard. The picture will disappear and you will be left with a box with a black border around it. If you wish to remove the black border, click on the box to select it, then right click on the box (not in the box) and choose FORMAT AUTOSHAPE. Change the line color to NO LINE.
You can now insert a picture --- from the INSERT menu, choose PICTURE – then choose either CLIP ART or FROM FILE. If you can not move your picture after you have inserted it, try this -----
Right click on the picture and choose FORMAT PICTURE. This will open up another window that has a number of tabs. To be able to move your picture, be sure that the FLOAT OVER TEXT has a checkmark in front of it on the POSITION tab.
Remember to keep saving your work – so that you do not lose it and have to start all over again.
Have fun designing your calendar. Remember, you can get pictures from your digital camera, your scanner, clipart, a picture that someone has emailed to you – or you can paste original pictures in the area. You can change the color of any item you want. When you are finished and have printed your calendar, you can staple the top together, punch a hole in the pages for hanging on the wall and you are ready to give your Christmas gift to someone.
John has placed a copy of the calendar without any pictures on it for you to download if you wish. Look in the OUT-GOING folder – and then the FUNSTUFF folder. It is called CALENDAR.DOC.

Create a Calendar in MS-Publisher 97

MS-Publisher 97 also has a wizard to help you create a calendar. Try it.

Here are a few tips about using MS-Publisher -----

Use your right mouse button on anything that you have selected. Look for CHANGE
TEXT – CHANGE FRAME – or CHANGE OBJECT. This will allow you to customize
                the select item.

Use the F9 key --- this will zoom you into the item that you are working on – so that
you can better see the changes you are making. Then the F9 key will toggle you back to a
                full page view.

To change the margins – look under ARRANGE – LAYOUT GUIDES. These are only
guides to help you layout your work – anything on the page will print – if your printer
                can handle it.

You can recolor the clipart that you have inserted by right clicking on it and choosing
                CHANGE OBJECT – RECOLOR OBJECT.

You can put a border around your picture or clipart – by selecting it and then right-clicking
on it – choose CHANGE FRAME.

If you wish to create a border on your page – from the side toolbar, create a picture frame.
Right click on it and choose CHANGE FRAME – LINE AND BORDER STYLE –
MORE STYLES – and then the tab for BORDER ART.

You can determine which picture or drawing object will be on top by using the
ARRANGE menu – and choosing the BRING FORWARD or SEND TO BACK.

Hyperlinks in Word

It is a good idea to turn off the feature of automatically creating a hyperlink everytime that you type a web address in your Word document.
To turn the feature off, go to the TOOLS menu – choose AUTO CORRECT -- then the tab AUTO FORMAT AS YOU TYPE – remove the checkmark from in front of INTERNET AND NETWORK PATHS AS YOU TYPE.
When you want to add a hyperlink, highlight the web address that you have typed, from the INSERT menu, choose HYPERLINK.

USB 2.0

USB 2.0, the next generation of the universal serial bus – a fast and flexible way to connect devices to your computer, is scheduled to be available near the end of this year.
USB 2.0 is reportedly up to 40 times faster than USB 1.1 devices. USB 2.0 will be backward and forward compatible. That means the current crop of USB devices should work with the new USB 2.0 ports. Also, all new 2.0 peripherals should work with the current USB 1.1 ports. When you mix old and new, you will be running your devices at the slower connection speed.
