This Week’s Program
Hugh will demonstrate how to
place multiple pictures on one sheet of paper in Picture Window Pro. After
that, we will discuss some of the items from recent handouts that we haven’t
talked about and have question and answer time.
Picture Window Pro 2.5
Hugh’s demonstration showed
us a few of the great features of Picture Window Pro. I liked the way that
he was able to automatically remove a stain from a picture and then do
a color correct to fix a picture that was turning red.
Hugh works with multiple
photo editing programs. He finds that the features for performing certain
types of editing work better in one program than another – so he often
uses many programs to perform his photo editing task.
But, one thing to remember
that Hugh mentioned --- Save the original file at least until you are
sure that you are through editing.
He also mentioned that the
latest version of Picture Window Pro is version 3.0 and sells for $89.00
Way to Restore Missing Windows Font
If you have accidentally (or
otherwise) deleted one of the fonts that Windows needs, you can restore
that font by the following method.
Use an unzip program (such
as WinZip) to open the file MINI.CAB which is located on your Windows CD.
Copy the font file (example: SSERIFE.FON) to C:\WINDOWS\FONTS. Restart
Windows and the font should be there.
Sending Your Favorities Via E-Mail
If you would like to send your
Favorities from Internet Explorer via email, you have to export them to
a HTML file first. To do this in Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater, under
FILE – choose IMPORT AND EXPORT. That should start the IMPORT/EXPORT WIZARD.
Choose to EXPORT FAVORITIES. On the next screen, choose which folder you
want to export – if you want to export ALL of your Favorities, then just
click on the Favorities folder. Choose to export them to a file and be
sure you know where they are going to be saved and what you are naming
the file. If you don’t understand the system, just type in
C:\MY DOCUMENTS\FAVORITIES.HTM
This will then place the file in the My Documents folder – and the
file will be named Favorities.htm.
You can then go to your
email program and attach the file to your email message. When the person
receives it, all of the links will be viewable and clickable.
Web Sites
BigZoo http://www.bigzoo.com
This site was mentioned
at the meeting last week. You can purchased a calling card that can be
renewed to help cut your long distance telephone charges.
They are advertising long
distance calls for 2.9 to 3.9 cents a minute. Overseas calls vary – from
about 7 to 9 cents a minute to Italy and 75 cents a minute to Hondorus.
Ancestry Corner http://www.ancestrycorner.com/forms.htm
This is a great site to
obtain many types of genealogy forms. They are PDF files for Acrobat Reader.
Classmates http://www.classmates.com
Look here for old high school
friends – or when the next reunion is for your high school.
WeatherBug http://www.weatherbug.com
You can download a small
program that will give you all the weather information you need including
current temperature, high and low temperature, monthly rain accumulation,
wind speed and direction, peak wind gusts, wind chill, forecasts, sunrise/sunset
and the moonphase. This program gathered the information from a local source
while you are on the internet – and you will see the temperature displayed
on the task bar by the clock.. The information is determined by the zipcode
that you enter.
Feathering Edges and Soft Borders – PhotoShop
Soft Border
To create a soft border
on your picture, from the SELECT menu, choose ALL. This will place a dotted
box around your picture to show that it is selected. Again using the SELECT
menu, choose MODIFY – BORDER. You will be ask how many pixels (this would
be the width of the border) to make it – with a maximum allowed of 64.
This is a matter of choice and the size of the picture that you are working
with. You will now see to dotted boxes around your picture. You can now
take your paint bucket and fill this area. To see the results, click on
the marquee tool (the one in the upper left of the tools) and then you
can click on your picture to make the dotted boxes disappear and see your
results. You will now have a border that fades into your picture.
Feathering Edges
To create a soft edge around
your selection, double click on the MARQUEE tool to open up the Marquee
properties. Set the number of pixels to use. Now you can draw a selection
box around the area that you want to feather. You will not see anything
happen – but when you now COPY the selection (EDIT – COPY) and then create
a new sheet and then PASTE (EDIT – PASTE) – you will definitely see the
feathering.
To feather the edges of
the picture that you have opened, double click on the MARQUEE tool to open
up the Marquee properties. Set the number of pixels to use. Now draw a
selection box around the picture. When your selection box has been created,
then go to SELECT – INVERSE. This will create a double dotted box – now
just press the DELETE key on the keyboard or go to EDIT – CLEAR. This will
give very soft edges to your picture depending on how many pixels you set
your feather to.
NOTE: Be sure to set the
feather back to zero when you are through.
Place Multiple Pictures On One Page – Photo Shop
5.0
If you wish to print multiple
pictures on one sheet of paper in Photo Shop 5.0, you must start with FILE-NEW.
Set your width in inches to 7.8 and your height in inches to 10.2 and your
resolution to 300 and the mode to RGB color. Set the background to either
transparent or white. This will create a blank sheet of paper approximately
the size of the area that your printer can print to on a 8.5x11 sheet of
paper.
Next, open a picture that
you would like to place on this paper. Click on IMAGE – IMAGE SIZE. Change
the size under the Print Size to be approximately the size that you would
like it on your new sheet of paper. You can only change the width or the
height (the other should change automatically) – remember the size of your
paper and think about how many pictures you are going to place on it to
help determine the size. Let’s use as an example – 4 pictures on the paper,
so we will make our picture be 3.7 inches wide and then check to see what
height was created. Also change the resolution to 300.
After your picture has been
resized, select it – SELECT-ALL. This will place a dotted marquee around
your picture. Now from the EDIT menu, choose COPY.
Next click on your new sheet
of paper. Then from the EDIT menu, choose PASTE. Then using the MOVE tool
(upper right tool on the tool bar) – you can position your picture on the
page.
