This Week’s Meeting

John Watkins will be hosting the meeting again this week. He will start his meeting off with the Taskbar and the System Tray. He will be continuing his discussion of "Windows for beginners hints and tips" and include a little more for those with a little bit more knowledge.

Miscellaneous Topics From Last Week’s Program

FTP – File Transfer Protocol
My Downloads – Always create a folder for placing the files that you download from the internet. This serves two purposes. It helps you locate the file so that you can install it and provides a storage place for the file so that you do not have to download it again.
WinZip – WinZip is a utility program that everyone should have. WinZip compresses files to make them smaller in size for sending or saving. It also is a method of keeping a group of files together by packaging them into one file.
View a folder as a web page – If you wish to view the contents of a folder as a web page – In Windows 98, from MY COMPUTER – double click on C:\ to open it up – then double click on the folder that you would like to view as a web page – from the top menu, choose VIEW – then AS WEB PAGE. In Windows ME, from MY COMPUTER – CONTROL PANEL – FOLDER OPTIONS -- on the GENERAL tab, choose ENABLE WEB CONTENT IN FOLDERS. When you are viewing the contents of a folder as a web page, you receive a small picture (in the lower left) of any graphics files or a summary of other files.
Send To – The easiest way to copy something to your floppy disk (A:\) is to use the SEND TO command. Simply place your floppy disk in drive A:\ Then locate the file that you would like to place on the floppy – right click on it – and choose SEND TO from the menu. This will open up a drop down menu where one of the choices should be Floppy disk (or A:\). This can even be done from the FIND window.
PrnSrc (Print Screen) button – I press the Print Screen button on my keyboard, but nothing prints on my printer. When the Print Screen button is pressed, it prints (saves) a picture of your computer screen to memory – you can not see anything happen. To make use of this, you must now open up a program (WordPad – Word – Paint, etc) and choose PASTE from the EDIT menu. The picture of your computer screen should now be viewable and printable.

Recycle HP Inkjet Cartridges

HP (Hewlett Packard) has a recycle program for their inkjet cartridges.
Because their unique recycling processes are very sensitive to material contamination, they cannot take back and recycle cartridges from other manufacturers. This program is currently offered in the United States and is being piloted in several countries worldwide.
The returned cartridges are processed, and materials separated for purification into raw materials for use in other industries to new manufacture products. Examples of products made from recycled hp inkjet cartridge materials include automobile parts, trays used in microchip fabrication processes, copper wire, steel plates and the precious metals used in electronics and electrical equipment. Depending on the model, hp is able to recycle up to 65% of the print cartridge by weight. The remaining parts that cannot be recycled (ink, foam & composite parts) are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner.
Visit this website to learn more about the program. They will send you postage free envelopes for returning the empty cartridges to them.
