This Week’s Meeting

Well, John Watkins is finally here.  His subject will be to FILES – what they are – where they are – how to find them – what to do when saving them—where is my C drive.

Looking for books ????

Alibris

Here is a good web site that specializes in hard-to-find books, including out-of-print and foreign-language titles.  They also tell you the condition that the book is in.

Advanced Book Exchange

This is another great way to access independent dealers of used, secondhand, rare, and out-of-prints books.  You can search by geographic location and therefore locate a second hand bookstore in your area.

Amazon.Com

Amazon is one of the largest online book store.  You can order books, videos, music and also other products from them.

Barnes and Noble

Barnes and Noble also has a great web site for locating books that you wish to purchase.  Of course, they also sell movies, videos and other products.  They even have a section for used – rare – out-of-print books.

Make Panoramic Pictures

ADG Panorama Tools 4.0 – this program allows you to turn a series of digital photographs into a 360-degree panorama.  The program is free for noncommercial use and will align your images automatically and warp them for the 360-degree format.

ADG Panorama can be viewed through ADG Java Viewer 4.0 that eliminates any plug-in installation and gives a platform independent use on the Internet.

This program sounds interesting – if anyone tries it, please let the group know about it.  We have added this to the handout, because a member brought it to our attention and wondered if anyone had tried it.

Create Hyperlink in Word

To create a hyperlink (or the ability to click on some words in your Word document and have it take you to a web page) – try this.

Type your article or document.  Select (or highlight) the word or words that you would like to be used to take the person to a particular webpage – right click on the highlighted area and choose HYPERLINK from the menu.  This will allow you to type in the web address that is to be associated with the words.

Web Site Demonstrated

Larry Kebel demonstrated his website at the meeting last week.  He has created a website dealing with genealogy on the Kebel name.  He has done all of it by using Notepad to write the HTML code – which he says is easy to learn (or at least as easy as trying to learn to use a large software program like FrontPage in order to create his webpage).

He has also created a webpage for stamp trading.  This he is proud to announce – makes use of a database that is run in PC File (a DOS program).

Notice that his genealogy web address ends in one of the new extensions  --  INFO

Larry has registered his web address – and his site is being hosted by Netfirms – which allows free webhosting for any business.  With the free webhosting, comes those advertisements at the top of your site.  For as little as $5.00 a month, they will host your web site without advertisements.
