Computer Info –
This Week’s Meeting
This week will be a question and answer session and a refresh of the information that has been in the handouts for the past month – with a little on Excel as you can see from this handout.
The next
meeting will be
Google
Google’s latest toolbar puts the search ability always in front of you while you have your browser opened. But, it greatest feature is probable its ability to block the popup windows. You can download it from the Google website. At the bottom of their page, click on SERVICES AND TOOLS. Scroll down and click on GOOGLE TOOLBAR.
Have you ever noticed that Google tries to suggest correct spelling when you are performing a search. At the top of your search results, you will find a line that starts with DID YOU MEAN: -- and then it will give you a hyperlink to the correct search word.

Hyperlink in Word
When you type a web address in Word and you place your cursor over it – it should turn to BLUE and your cursor should change to the shape of a hand. If this does not happen to you, then you can make this change.
The default is to hold down CTRL while clicking on your hyperlink. To change this, choose TOOLS – OPTIONS – then the EDIT tab. Remove the checkmark next to USE CTRL + CLICK TO FOLLOW HYPERLINK. Then click on OK. Now when you move your cursor over the hyperlink, it should change to the shape of a hand.
You can make a hyperlink out of any words that are in your document. Maybe you want to say CLICK HERE. Type the words, then highlight them – now right click on them and choose HYPERLINK. The text that you highlighted will be at the top – at the bottom, type in the web address that you would like them to go to.
Print Screen
“How do I take a screen shot?” Simply press the PRINT SCREEN button on your keyboard to send an image of your current screen to the Clipboard. If you want to capture an image of just the program (or window) you are working in, press ALT-PRINT SCREEN.
To view the image, open Microsoft Paint by clicking Start, Programs (All Programs in Windows XP), Accessories, and then Paint (or click Start, click Run, type mspaint in the Open field, and click OK). In Paint, click Edit and then click Paste. You can then save the picture (screen shot) as a JPEG. If you would like, you can open WordPad and paste it there – but then you would be saving it as a DOC (a document file).
To easily split your worksheet screen in Excel, place your mouse over the small rectangular button above the top of the vertical scroll bar or at the right end of the horizontal scroll bar. You will see the cursor change to two vertical or horizontal lines with arrows. Click and drag the box until you have two separate panes that let you easily compare and work with information in different parts of the worksheet.
Size of Toolbar Icons – Excel
If your monitor is configured to use a large resolution, Excel’s default-sized toolbar buttons can be difficult to read. To make them larger, click Tools, click Customize, and choose the Options tab. Under Other, click to select Large Icons. Click Close.
Text in Cell – Excel
You can insert line breaks within a cell, which is handy if you are using multiple-line headings or labels. When typing, press ALT-ENTER to go to the next line – this leaves you in the same cell and allows you to type another line of text in it.
Printing Selection – Excel
You can print a selection of cells in Excel rather than printing the entire worksheet. To do this, select the cells you need to print by clicking a cell and dragging to select a range of cells or if you need to select nonadjacent cells, hold down CTRL and click on the cells. Click File, click Print, and under Print What, click Selection. Click OK.
Printing Formulas – Excel
Sometimes it is useful to print the formulas so that you don’t forget how you obtained the numbers. To display formulas, click TOOLS, select FORMULA AUDITING, and click FORMULA AUDITING MODE. Click FILE, click PRINT, and choose whether you want the entire worksheet or a selection.
To turn off the displaying of the formulas, click TOOLS, select FORMULA AUDITING, and again click FORMULA AUDITING MODE.
Corrupted Worksheet – Excel
Excel will often automatically try to repair corrupted files – but on some files, you might have to do it manually. Click FILE, click OPEN, and then select the corrupted or damaged file. Click the arrow on the OPEN button, click OPEN AND REPAIR and choose REPAIR if you want Excel to recover as much of the file as possible or choose EXTRACT DATA if Excel was previously unable to Repair the file.
Change Worksheet Tab Color – Excel
Right click on the Worksheet Tab – choose TAB COLOR, click the color you want, and click OK. When the sheet is selected, you will see a thin colored line beneath the sheet name, and when it is not the selected one, the entire tab is colored for easy selection.
