Computer Info – September 1, 2004

This Week’s Meeting

Not sure what the topic will be ---- we might just rely on our question and answer format.  So bring your questions.

Print Your Screen (Screen Capture)

John emphasized this again at the last meeting – and it is a very good thing to learn.  When you are trying to tell people what the problem on your computer is, use your Print Screen command.

When the problem is on the screen, press and hold the ALT key and then press the PRINT SCRN key.  This captures a picture of your screen (the error message, what your settings are that you would like help with, etc.) and stores it in the computer’s memory.  Open WORD (or WORD-PAD) and PASTE – a picture of your screen should now appear in your Word document.  Print it so that you can show it to someone – or save your document and then you can email the picture of your screen to someone.

Re-installing Norton Anti-Virus

If you have ever un-installed your Norton Anti-Virus and then installed it again or installed a newer version – and discovered that the expiration date was not a year away --- then you will want to read this.

These are the instructions that I received from Symantec.

Go to the Control Panel – Add and Remove Programs.

Select Norton Anti-Virus and then click Change/Remove.

Select LiveUpdate and then click Change/Remove.

Next select LiveReg and click Change/Remove.

Next search and delete the two files that hold the information about the subscription.

            Start Windows Explorer.

Click the View menu and then click Options or Folder options.

            Click the View tab.

Uncheck “Hide file extensions for known file types.”

Uncheck “Hide protected operating system files” and under the “Hidden files” folder, click “Show hidden files and folders”.  Click Apply and then click OK.

Click Start, Find or Search and click Files or Folders.  Make sure that “Look in” is set to (C:) and that Include subfolders is checked.

In the “Named” or “Search for…” box, type the following text:

                        Catalog.LiveSubscribe

                        MyProfile.UserProfile

Then click Find Now or Search Now.  Delete the files that are displayed.

After deleteing these files, restart your computer and start the installation process.

Font Sizes in Word

How do I use a font size that is not listed?

In the Font Size box, just type ANY SIZE that you want – whether it is listed or not.  Size is unlimited.

Default Font in Word and Excel

IN EXCEL

On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the General tab.  In the Standard font box, choose a font.  In the Size box, type or choose a font size.  You must restart Excel to begin using the new default font and font size.

IN WORD

On the Format menu, click Font.  Select the options you want to apply (such as font, size, bold, underline, etc).  Then click Default.

Any new document you open will use the font settings you selected.

Thunderbird 0.7 (Email Pgm)

Thunderbird’s speed is obvious when you first launch the program.  Not only does the program load quickly, but the interface is also intuitive.

The top toolbar shows basic icons for Get Mail, Write and Address Book with a list of folders on the left and the message listing and preview pane occupying the rest of the interface.  It contains a junk mail filter and a built-in spellchecker.  Security is another strength of this software.  It doesn’t allow scripts to run by default, which helps protect the email client from infection by worms, viruses and Trojan horses.
